As far back as the twelfth century, the small hermitage of Santa Seraffa, perched atop the pass dividing the two valleys of Scrivia and Gavi, appears in contemporary documents as a goal of pilgrims. The Cistercian monks were even in those faraway centuries lavishing care on their vines and adding to the lustre of the excellent wine of Gavi. That reputation has grown through the years into wide renown for high quality. That historic building, which gave its name to our winery, owned by the Rusca family, today looks down over our vineyards, some planted on whitish, limestone soils, in the commune of Gavi, with others on the reddish, iron-bearing soils of the Rusca farm in the commune of Tassarolo. The estate's total 110 hectares include 21 under vine, planted predominantly to the cortese grape, which produces this area's Gavi wine; in addition, chardonnay, merlot and barbera are cultivated. After ten years of winemaking activity, production is presently about 100,000 bottles per year and is in a phase of healthy expansion. Since the 1989 harvest, our wines have been served on American Airlines, and our Gavi accompanied Pope John Paul II on his 1993 international flights - and he is reported to have enjoyed it. Our exports to Germany are substantial, with somewhat less going to the USA. We are open to expressions of interest from importers as well as distributors in Italy.
